The Ultimate Car Maintenance Checklist to Prevent Collisions

One of the simplest ways to avoid collisions is to ensure your car is ready for the road. Whether following a car maintenance checklist or a suggested car maintenance schedule, keeping your car running smoothly is the responsibility of every car owner.

Preventative maintenance isn’t just about avoiding a more costly repair or replacement to your vehicle down the line. It also helps spot serious issues that could cause collisions.

If you’re unsure where to start, don’t worry. Our handy car maintenance checklist is here to guide you through the entire process of routine car maintenance to keep you and your car safe.

What Maintenance Does a Car Need?

Let’s first look at the connection between car maintenance and collisions. You may ask “what maintenance does a car need?” and wonder how that maintenance translates into a safer vehicle.

There are many parts of a vehicle that require regular maintenance, and each of these parts can affect your driving if they aren’t in good shape. Improper maintenance is a leading cause of severe car crashes. Let’s look at the consequences of failing to perform proper vehicle maintenance:

  • Infrequent oil changes can affect vehicle handling. The driver can lose control of the vehicle and cause or contribute to an accident.
  • Malfunctioning lights—turn signals, headlights, or brake lights—affect your vehicle’s visibility on the road. Without working vehicle lights, other cars can’t see you in the dark or know your intentions when braking, turning, or changing lanes.
  • Defective brakes lengthen stop time and are unreliable. They could cause a collision if you can’t stop quickly.
  • Worn or improperly inflated tires are at a higher risk of blow-outs and will affect vehicle handling. A blow-out can steer the car in the wrong direction or slow down the car when not safe.
  • Failing wiper blades reduce your visibility when driving. If the weather conditions make it hard to see out the windshield, and your wipers don’t work properly, you could drive into another vehicle, miss something on the road, or miss traffic lights and stop signs.

9 Car Maintenance Checklist Items

Do your part to avoid these risks. Use this car checklist to properly maintain your vehicle. Many of these checklist items are quick and simple to complete.

  1. Engine Oil

  2. The engine oil in your vehicle lubricates the moving parts of your engine to manage friction and improve performance. The engine is at risk of failure if the engine oil is empty or too low. A good rule of thumb is that your motor oil should be emptied and refilled every 8,000 to 12,000 kilometers.

You can check your oil yourself by lifting the hood and using a dipstick to see the motor oil level. You can even perform an oil change if you know how, but to keep things simple, have a mechanic you trust check oil and coolant levels and do the oil change.

  3. Other Vehicle Fluids

  4. Refill the windshield wiper fluid yourself by lifting the hood and pouring washer fluid into the appropriate pipe. Dealing with engine coolant, antifreeze, transmission fluid, and steering fluid is a little more complicated, so leave them to the pros at a reputable car repair centre.

  5. Car Battery

  6. In general, a car battery charges while the engine is on. The car battery ensures the vehicle runs properly; if it fails, so does the vehicle. If a dashboard warning light comes on, take your vehicle to a mechanical shop.

  7. Tires

  8. Tires are your only point of contact with the road, and it’s important to keep them in top condition. There are a few factors to check for to ensure they’re well-maintained. While you can check tire pressure yourself, tire rotation, alignment, and balance should be checked by a professional.

Use a tire pressure gauge to check tire pressure, and inflate your tires according to the vehicle’s specifications for proper grip and handling. While you’re at it, don’t forget to make sure your spare is also at the correct levels.

  1. Air Filters

  2. Your car maintenance checklist should also include checking filters. While the cabin air filter keeps you from breathing in dust, pollen, and other contaminants while driving, the engine air filter keeps debris from contaminating the engine. When this air filter is overdue for a change, the engine works harder, increasing the chances of overheating or failure.

  3. Spark Plugs

  4. Spark plugs help your vehicle turn on and accelerate. However, they’re also susceptible to debris build-up, which is why they should be checked occasionally and replaced when necessary.

  5. Belts

  6. The timing belt and serpentine belt need to be replaced at 100,000 to 160,000 kilometres. Timing belts open and close valves in the engine at specific times while driving to ensure smooth operation. If a timing belt fails, it can lead to a serious accident.

  7. Windshield Wiper Blades

  8. Along with windshield washer fluid, the windshield wipers should be monitored and replaced whenever the wiper blades start to bend, peel, or leave streaks on the window. If the windshield wipers aren’t helping with visibility while driving, you could be at risk of an accident in rainy conditions where visibility is impacted.

  9. Brakes

  10. Have your mechanic check your brakes whenever you bring your vehicle in. Brakes and brake pads should always be in top condition to ensure safe driving and short braking distances.

A brake inspection could be the difference between a quick stop and a detrimental collision. Check the brake pads, pedals, linings, and brake fluid. All these parts need to work together for a safe drive.
